This stunning carved koi is known as a jizai kagi. This piece served a functional purpose in traditional Japanese homes as a hearth kettle hook used to suspend a kettle over an open fire. It is carved from a single piece of wood and features intricate detailing of the scales and a lifelike design. The tail has a twist and a flip at the end to indicate a swimming motion. Fish designs were used as charms to prevent fires, due to their association with water, and are also symbols of strength, perseverance, and good fortune in Japanese culture. A beautiful artwork and symbolic antique for a lucky home. It has an iron loop near the tail for hanging and a hole through the head for the chain for the kettle.
SIZE: 18" long
CONDITION: Dark patina. Small chips at the end of the tail; shown in the last photo. A scuff at the nose.
