When you sell vintage items, you can't help but become a student of history. I don't exactly memorize dates and events, but I definitely have come to understand the moods and styles of a time period. One thing is for sure: whatever the mood, there is a drink to match.

Something that seems common to every culture and time period is liquor. Spirits are central in celebration. They add to the festivity of an event. They weave their way into every ritual and social interaction. The way that a drink is presented defines the feeling. The right glass and barware matters.

I feel like the sixties had a special flair for the cocktail hour. The fashion was neat, tailored and elegant and the barware certainly matched. Everything had long, slim lines and a certain formality. If you are building a bar cart or setting up a beverage counter, mid-century barware is definitely a must.
Design tip: silver begs to be softened with white linens.

Though formal and classy, there was often a sweet whimsy to the glassware. Lots of balls and dots could be found. The Boopy glasses above have the cutest feet!

Color also boldly stepped up to the bar. No mid-century bar is complete without some textured, colored glass.

If you are trying to build a bar with class, quirk and style, definitely go retro. Whether you go for tall, elegant clears and silvers or have fun with texture and color, the mid-century bar is where it's at.
I have been selling vintage for seven years. All products pictured in this post were available when I wrote this, but most are one-of-a-kind. When they are gone, they're gone!
