When I find Japanese objects, I know that the antiquing deities have smiled upon me. If you should be so lucky as to come upon such objects, work them into your home and you will see why they bring such joy.
There is a strong focus on the theme of nature. Often depicting nature, and made from natural material, it is an aesthetic that calms, uplifts and reminds me that beauty surrounds me. Studying the wonder of nature is known to teach one the art of finding happiness.

This koi fish is an amazing find. Carved from solid wood, this antique is known as a jizai kagi. This piece served a functional purpose in traditional Japanese homes as a hearth kettle hook used to suspend a kettle over an open fire. It features intricate detailing of the scales and a lifelike design; the tail has a twist and a flip at the end to indicate a swimming motion. Fish designs were used as charms to prevent fires, due to their association with water, and are also symbols of strength, perseverance, and good fortune in Japanese culture. It is just gorgeous folk art-- and talk about a conversation piece!
There is a whimsy and sweetness to the Japanese objects I collect.

Some are from my personal collection and some are for sale
In the above assemblage of kokeshi dolls, there is so much to love. The simple shapes have huge charm. Their little faces are so sweet and cute. The natural wood forms are painted with colors both bright and soft. They bring an element of humanity to a shelf or tabletop.
Japanese craftsmanship is METICULOUS.

Woven Tea Cup Coasters Set of 5
These tiny, woven coasters are meant to go underneath a tea cup. They protect the table, and also elevate a cup of tea to something special. The weaving on these little treasures is a marvel-- think tea ceremony.
Color is often muted and natural in art objects from Japan. But as in nature, when it is time for color it really flashes.

Red Lacquerware Tea Set in Case
Lacquerware is a Japanese specialty. Wood is carved impossibly thin and light. It is then coated in layer upon layer of thin lacquer. Never a bubble, never a brush mark. The resulting product is exceptionally light and strong. This perfect little tea set is adorned with blossoms, branches and bamboo. Craftsmanship, natural elements and color like fire. Quite a find.
Add some Japanese Zen to your home and you'll be inspired by this simple, elegant, sweet aesthetic.
I have been selling vintage for seven years. All products pictured in this post were available when I wrote this, but most are one-of-a-kind. When they are gone, they're gone!
